Concept

The premise

New Orleans keeps no receipts. Forty years of sessions, mixes, and cultural labor evaporate because nobody was assigned to write it down. This site is the receipt — a working archive built by the person who was in the room.

Why it is not a portfolio

A portfolio argues for future work. An archive establishes the record. Every route here is a primary source: dated timeline entries, credited photography, registered catalog works, transcribed declarations, and grant-ready institutional documents.

The design argument

Museum-editorial rather than agency-modern. Cormorant Garamond and Karla against near-black navy with champagne gold. Plate numbers, caption rails, and verification flags borrowed from archival cataloguing rather than from web fashion.

The integrity system

The archive audits itself. Perceptual hashing surfaces duplicate frames, an identity-verification pass flags uncertain attributions, and unverified plates carry a visible flag and are withheld from search metadata. Being honest about doubt is part of the design.

Craft evidence

Design & art direction

  • Single typographic system across 98 routes: Cormorant Garamond display, Karla text, Jost and monospace for institutional labels.
  • All colour expressed as OKLCH design tokens in one stylesheet; no hard-coded colour anywhere in components.
  • Archival vocabulary — plate numbers, accession logs, caption rails, verification flags — used as the interface grammar.
  • Original photography and video, shot and graded in-house, carried at full editorial scale.

Engineering

  • TanStack Start on React 19 with server-side rendering and file-based routing across 98 routes.
  • Bespoke WebGL: floating gold monogram, Optimus Maximus medallion with procedural studio environment reflections, hologram shader lab, sundial and orrery computed from real solar geometry.
  • Lazy-facade YouTube embeds and poster-framed, loudness-normalised MP4 for media weight control.
  • Row-level-secured backend for submissions, RSVPs, and admin-only archive review tooling.

Accessibility

  • Targeting WCAG 2.1 AA. Automated axe-core sweeps run across key routes; definition-list semantics, colour contrast, and scrollable-region focus violations remediated.
  • Skip link, visible focus rings on a dedicated amber token, and semantic landmark structure on every page.
  • Full prefers-reduced-motion support: every WebGL scene, marquee, and transition degrades to a static composition.
  • A published accessibility statement at /accessibility with a contact route for barrier reports.

Performance & findability

  • Server-rendered HTML with per-route head metadata: unique title, description, Open Graph, canonical, and Twitter card.
  • Structured data throughout — Person, Organization, WebSite, Article, MusicRecording, ImageGallery, and BreadcrumbList.
  • Absolute image URLs and a curated image index so photography surfaces in image search.
  • Installable web app manifest with a maskable brand icon.
