Ultrasonic New Orleansto DARP Atlanta

Gentle Touch was tracked at Ultrasonic Studios in New Orleans by Steve Reynolds with a full live band, then mixed with keyboard overdubs at DARP in Atlanta. Byron Jupiter Jr produced, sequenced and arranged on MPC60 and JV80, and overdubbed basslines on the uptempo songs.

    Soundscape Studios

    Atlanta bedrock — early Southern R&B and hip-hop tracking. Sets the stage for the northwest Atlanta industrial corridor.

    Bosstown — 677 Antone St NW, Atlanta GA 30318

    Acquired by Bobby Brown. Organized Noize early sessions — Crumblin' Erb was recorded here. Byron Jupiter Jr's first production on Genelec 1031A happened in Studio A, thanks to PK Lawson, Phred Mosbey, Jerry Flowers and Phil Tan. Inspiration for The Box Studios at 7367 Chef Menteur Hwy.

  3. 1992–93

    Ultrasonic NOLA → DARP Atlanta — Gentle Touch

    Darrius Henry and R McMaster, budding managerial executives based in New Orleans, opened the door to Dallas Austin Recording Project. Tracked at Ultrasonic by Steve Reynolds; mixed and overdubbed at DARP with Sir Dean Grant on keyboards, engineered by Darrin Prindle, assisted by Leslie Brathwaite.

    DARP Studios — Dallas Austin Recording Project

    Founded by Dallas Austin at the Trabert Street compound. TLC, Boyz II Men, Madonna's Bedtime Stories sessions. The Atlanta sound globalized.

  5. 2000

    Stankonia Studios

    Same northwest Atlanta studio row, the Bosstown footprint evolved. SL 4000 G installed 1988 served 36 years of hits before its October 15, 2024 replacement with an SSL Duality Fuse SuperAnalogue 48-fader. Dungeon Family nucleus — Goodie Mob, Killer Mike, CeeLo Green; Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik tracked across Bosstown, DARP, Doppler and Purple Dragon.

Produced 1991–2005. M.I.P.A. winner for best gear of the nineties and a 2014 TECnology Hall of Fame inductee — the mother of the modern two-way active monitor: 2×120W, 120dB peak, flat to 23kHz, DCW waveguide, modular crossover, rubber shock mounts, later succeeded by the 8050A.
