Byron L. Jupiter Jr.’s operational standard was forged behind two historic family anchors in Greater New Orleans. At Jupiter Exxon, the family’s Black-owned full-service station, checking every fluid, greeting every driver by name, and holding absolute cash-routing discipline set a lifetime standard of care. At the pawn shop, standing in for family, he learned equipment valuation, two-ledger accounting, and multi-stream operations as a young technician and studio rat.
Traversing the city on the Galvez bus line — from McMain High School Uptown, through the 7th Ward ancestral house built by Uncle Herman, down to his 9th Ward home base at Lizardi and North Robertson — he pioneered pre-internet communications, running copper telephone wire and phone links to execute real-time scratch battles across town.
His first production laboratory was the Lizardi and N. Robertson studio — distinct from Mannie Fresh’s 7th Ward Scatter Sites Studio — backed by an industrialized wall of sound: 18-inch subwoofers, 15-inch woofers, compression horns, and Peavey SP-1/SP-2 enclosures. A round-the-clock testing ground for underground tape mixes, sub-bass calibration, and bounce rhythms.
